What is stem splitting?
Source separation: a model takes one finished stereo mix and reconstructs the individual parts that went into it. You get separate audio files for vocals, drums, bass and the remaining instruments, each playable on its own.
Should I use this or the vocal remover?
If all you want is the song without the singing, use the vocal remover — it is faster and costs less because it only makes one cut. Use the stem splitter when you need the parts separately: remixing, sampling, or rebuilding an arrangement.
How accurate is it?
It runs on Demucs, trained on a large catalogue of commercial music. No separation is perfect — sounds that overlap in frequency (kick and bass, vocal and lead synth) are where artefacts show up. Dense, loud masters are harder than sparse ones.
What audio formats are supported?
MP3, WAV, OGG and FLAC up to 100MB. Use the highest-quality source you have — separation quality follows input quality closely.
How long does it take?
Typically one to three minutes, longer for full-length tracks and for four stems rather than two. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
Can I use the stems commercially?
Separating a recording does not transfer any rights in it. Personal projects, practice and analysis are fine; anything you release needs clearance for the original.
