How to convert audio to MIDI
- 1
Choose an audio file
MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC or M4A, up to 10 minutes. The file is read by your browser and never uploaded.
- 2
Basic Pitch transcribes the notes
Spotify's open-source Basic Pitch model runs on your device and detects pitch, timing, velocity and pitch bends. A three-minute song takes about a minute on a laptop.
- 3
Check the notes, download the .mid
Preview the result on the piano roll, adjust how many notes it keeps, then download a standard MIDI file for Logic, Ableton, FL Studio or any other DAW.
Who uses an audio to MIDI converter
Producers
Pull a melody or bassline out of a voice memo, a sample or a reference track and keep working on it as MIDI.
Students and teachers
Turn a recording into notes to study a part, then open it in notation software and print it.
Singers and songwriters
Hum or sing an idea into your phone, convert it, and put a real instrument on the melody.
MP3 to MIDI: what converts well, and what does not
- →Works best. One instrument or one voice at a time: a sung melody, a piano part, a guitar line, a bass.
- →Works, with cleanup. Chords on piano or guitar. Expect a few extra notes from overtones — set Notes to Fewer.
- →Works poorly. A full mix with drums and vocals. Split it into stems first and convert the stem you need.
- →Not transcribed. Drums and percussion. The model detects pitched notes only.
Converting a full mix? Separate it first with the stem splitter or the vocal remover, then convert the stem you need.
From MIDI to sheet music
This converter gives you a .mid file, not a printed score — but a MIDI file is one step away from sheet music.
- 1Convert and download the .mid. Use a single instrument or a separated stem — a clean piano or vocal line gives the most readable notes.
- 2Open it in notation software. MuseScore is free and opens .mid files directly; Flat, Dorico and Sibelius do too. The notes appear on a staff straight away.
- 3Tidy the rhythm. Set the time signature and quantize to the shortest note value you actually play (often eighth or sixteenth notes), so the score is not full of tiny rests.
- 4Fix the few wrong notes. Fast runs and soft notes are where the converter slips. Play the MIDI back against the recording and correct what sounds off — then print or export a PDF.
Audio to MIDI FAQ
Is this audio to MIDI converter really free?
Yes. There is no account, no credits and no limit on how many files you convert. The conversion runs on your own device, so it costs us nothing to offer.
How do I convert an MP3 to MIDI?
Choose the MP3 above and press Convert to MIDI. When it finishes, check the piano roll and press Download .mid. WAV, OGG, FLAC and M4A files work the same way.
Is my audio uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is decoded and transcribed inside your browser. Only the model itself (about 1MB) is downloaded from our site.
Can I convert piano audio to MIDI?
Yes, and solo piano is one of the cases it handles well, including chords. If you see stray high notes, switch Notes to Fewer before you download.
Can it convert a full song with vocals and drums?
It will produce a file, but notes from different instruments land on one track and drums are ignored. For a usable result, separate the song into stems first and convert one stem at a time.
What model does it use?
Basic Pitch, an open-source transcription model from Spotify's Audio Intelligence Lab (Apache-2.0). It is the same model we used to run on our servers — now it runs on yours.
